The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its 2023 report, showcasing a significant increase in paper recycling compared to 1990. The report highlights that 65-69 percent of paper available for recovery in the United States was recycled in 2023, a substantial improvement over past recycling rates. This data is the result of AF&PA’s enhanced methodology that combines industry data and subject matter expertise.
According to AF&PA President and CEO Heidi Brock, the surge in paper recycling signifies an environmental triumph. The updated methodology for calculating recycling rates reflects a commitment to leveraging the best available data to support industry investments and enhance paper recycling and recovery efforts. The paper industry has made strides in recycling, with nearly 60 percent more paper recycled in 2023 than in 1990.
Cardboard recycling also saw a positive trend in 2023, with a recycling rate ranging from 71-76 percent. This rate encompasses various collection channels, including industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential sectors. AF&PA’s updated methodology for estimating product packaging imports/exports has led to a more comprehensive and accurate cardboard recycling rate calculation.
The updated methodology involves improved estimates of imported product packaging, deductions for materials not suitable for manufacturing, adjustments for different types of packaging in commodity bales, and third-party validation to ensure accuracy. These refinements aim to provide a more precise and reliable recycling rate that reflects the evolving global economic landscape.
Industry investments in paper recycling have been substantial, with plans to utilize over nine million tons of recycled paper by 2025. Projects include the construction of new mills, expansion of existing facilities, and upgrades to machinery. AF&PA’s updated methodology is expected to guide the industry towards capturing more paper for manufacturing new products, emphasizing the importance of policy development and consumer education to enhance recycling practices.
The outlook for the paper recycling industry is optimistic, with a focus on continuous improvement and sustainability. By leveraging advanced methodologies and industry expertise, AF&PA and its stakeholders are poised to drive further advancements in paper recycling, contributing to environmental preservation and resource conservation.
