In Kumanovo, the MIT Group has been at the forefront of recycling paper waste since 2015. What sets them apart is their innovative approach of transforming waste into industrial packaging, a product that has gained popularity in the market. With support from the European Union, MIT has significantly enhanced its recycling capabilities, aligning with the principles of the circular economy.
Entrepreneur Oliver Tasevski proudly displays samples of egg trays in various sizes at his office desk, showcasing the end result of a meticulous process that begins with the collection of paper and cardboard waste. By converting this waste into pulp, MIT Group utilizes it as the primary raw material for manufacturing their packaging products.
Recognizing the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives, Tasevski emphasizes the importance of recycled paper products in the EU, especially as traditional packaging materials like polystyrene and plastic face scrutiny. He firmly believes that recycled paper is the way forward for sustainable packaging solutions.
As a beneficiary of the EU’s support program for small and medium-sized enterprises in North Macedonia, MIT Group has received substantial financial assistance to upgrade its equipment. This investment has nearly doubled the company’s capacity to process paper waste, enabling them to produce a wider range of industrial packaging while also reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
With the introduction of advanced technology, MIT Group has expanded its product line to include not just egg trays but also items like cup holders and packaging for the footwear industry. This diversification has not only boosted production but also created employment opportunities, particularly for women and individuals from vulnerable social groups.
Furthermore, MIT Group has initiated a comprehensive system for the collection, transportation, and treatment of paper waste by strategically placing special containers outside supermarkets in Kumanovo. This proactive approach aims to streamline the recycling process and foster a culture of environmental responsibility within the community.
EU Ambassador Michalis Rokas commended MIT Group as a shining example of how EU assistance can catalyze the transition towards a sustainable economy. By supporting initiatives like MIT’s, the EU’s ‘EU for Economic Growth’ program aims to promote environmentally conscious practices among businesses while enhancing their competitiveness.
Through this program, 25 enterprises across North Macedonia have received funding to integrate green technologies and renewable energy sources into their operations. The collective effort is projected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, equivalent to the annual output of thousands of cars, thereby addressing the country’s air quality challenges.
By fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability, the EU’s collaboration with companies like MIT Group underscores the importance of embracing eco-friendly practices in the pursuit of a greener future for all.
