However, when restaurants face multistate outbreaks like the one that hit Chipotle Mexican Grill in 2015, the consequences are far-reaching. Maria Kalaitzandonakes, a professor of agricultural and consumer economics at Illinois, emphasizes that such incidents not only lead to financial losses and negative media coverage but also taint the public’s perception of subsequent smaller outbreaks within the same company.
Chipotle’s experience serves as a case study in the research, shedding light on the aftermath of both single-state and multistate outbreaks. By analyzing the stock market response and media coverage surrounding eight outbreaks at the fast-casual chain, the researchers uncovered a notable shift in how these incidents were perceived before and after the high-profile multistate E. coli outbreaks.
Before the widely publicized multistate outbreaks, single-state incidents at Chipotle were largely overlooked by the media and had minimal financial impact.
