Waste Management (WM) has unveiled its latest Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Elkridge, Maryland, a $50 million project with the largest processing capacity among all its recycling centers. This new facility, capable of handling 250,000 tons annually, is strategically positioned to cater to major urban hubs like Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The Elkridge MRF represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, which was located just across the street. The older facility processed up to 200,000 tons per year before being replaced by the new, more automated plant. The demand for recycling services in the region prompted WM to continue operating both facilities during the transition phase.

Chief Sustainability Officer Tara Hemmer highlighted the advanced technology integrated into the new Elkridge MRF, boasting 22 optical sorters, seven balers, nine ballistic separators, and other cutting-edge equipment. The shift towards automation not only enhances efficiency but also aligns with WM’s forward-looking approach to meet evolving customer needs and drive material quality.

As part of its modernization efforts, WM aimed to streamline operations by reducing workforce through attrition. By closing the former plant, the company planned to eliminate around 66 positions previously filled by temporary workers. The new Elkridge facility now employs 65 individuals across two shifts, with an emphasis on upskilling employees for roles in maintenance and equipment operations.
Local officials commended WM for its investment in the Elkridge MRF, emphasizing the facility’s role in facilitating recycling for Howard County residents and ensuring high-quality materials for end markets. The project aligns with WM’s broader commitment to invest approximately $1.4 billion in enhancing recycling infrastructure across North America by 2026, with an expected annual capacity increase of 2.8 million tons.
WM’s expansion efforts extend beyond Maryland, with the recent opening of the Mesquite Creek Recycling Facility in Texas. Valued at $72 million, this MRF caters to the burgeoning markets around San Antonio and Austin, reflecting WM’s strategic focus on growth opportunities in new regions.
Looking ahead, WM plans to introduce more automation investments and expand into new markets in the coming years. By staying at the forefront of recycling technology and operational efficiency, WM aims to not only meet current demands but also anticipate future industry trends and customer preferences.
With a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation, WM’s commitment to enhancing recycling infrastructure underscores the company’s dedication to driving positive environmental impact while fostering economic growth and resource conservation in communities across North America.
