DPW Earth Day Event to Feature Paper Shredding & Recycled Mattresses

The Department of Public Works in Watertown will be organizing an Earth Day Event on April 19, 2025, exclusively for Watertown residents at the Jewish Community Day School Parking Lot. The event, scheduled from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, aims to promote sustainability and environmental consciousness.

Various activities are planned for the event, including paper shredding, mattress recycling for a reduced fee of $25 per unit, free dehumidifier collection, styrofoam recycling, a clothing drive, distribution of finished compost and soil, and the giveaway of baby oak trees.

One of the highlights of the event is the mattress recycling initiative by HandUp, where residents can bring in mattresses and box springs for a discounted rate. The City will cover part of the cost, making it an affordable and eco-friendly option for residents looking to dispose of these items responsibly.

In collaboration with Helpsy, Watertown is also facilitating the recycling and repurposing of old textiles and clothes. Residents are encouraged to declutter their closets and donate unwanted clothing, with the convenience of free curbside collection provided by Helpsy.

For confidential document disposal, Watertown has partnered with Shred-it to securely shred papers, ensuring they are recycled appropriately through Stericycle. Residents are advised to bring only confidential documents for shredding, while other paper materials can be placed in curbside recycle bins.

Styrofoam recycling, in partnership with Save That Stuff, offers residents the opportunity to recycle rigid white Styrofoam, excluding packing peanuts or takeout containers. This initiative aims to divert Styrofoam waste from landfills and promote recycling practices within the community.

Additionally, MassSave will be present at the event to collect and recycle used dehumidifiers for free, assisting residents in applying for rebates through the MassSave program. Moreover, residents can avail themselves of Black Earth Compost’s Compost Soil Blend on a first-come, first-serve basis, promoting the use of compost for gardening and landscaping purposes.

To foster a greener environment, Mike Micelli, Watertown’s Tree Warden, will be distributing Oak Tree Saplings to residents, encouraging tree planting and environmental stewardship in the community. This initiative aligns with the Earth Day Event’s mission of promoting sustainability and eco-conscious practices among Watertown residents.
