Amazon has made a significant environmental move in Australia by transitioning from single-use plastic delivery bags to recyclable paper bags and envelopes in its distribution network. This initiative covers all products shipped from Amazon Australia, including those from third-party sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). The shift to flexible paper bags and padded envelopes enhances recyclability, allowing customers to dispose of the packaging in household recycling bins.
Janet Menzies, Amazon Australia Country Manager, highlighted the extensive process involved in developing and testing the paper envelopes to ensure they withstand the delivery process while safeguarding the items inside. This shift represents a crucial step towards sustainable packaging practices, with Amazon committed to ongoing innovation in this area.
While Amazon strives to minimize single-use plastic packaging, some exceptions may still occur, especially with third-party sellers managing their own packaging. In such cases, Amazon provides guidance on alternative packaging solutions. Moreover, when products arrive in manufacturer-supplied plastic bags, Amazon opts to deliver them as is to avoid additional packaging. Plastic materials like bubble wrap are used judiciously for protecting delicate or liquid items.
Amazon’s efforts to enhance packaging extend beyond paper bags, including reducing cardboard box weights and incorporating more recycled content. In recent years, Amazon Australia has replaced plastic air pillows with recyclable paper fillers and reduced box weights by 25%. The company has also invested in advanced paper packaging machines to create bespoke paper bags on demand, significantly reducing packaging weight and waste.
Through programs like ‘Ships in Product Packaging,’ Amazon delivers essential items directly in the manufacturer’s original packaging, eliminating the need for additional materials. This approach aligns with Amazon’s global sustainability goals, which have led to a 43% reduction in outbound packaging weight per shipment on average since 2015. Notably, Amazon has avoided over 3 million metric tons of packaging material worldwide and significantly increased the number of products shipped without additional packaging in Australia.
Amazon’s commitment to sustainable packaging practices is evident in its continuous efforts to reduce waste and optimize packaging materials. By prioritizing recyclable paper alternatives and minimizing unnecessary packaging, Amazon is making substantial strides towards a more eco-friendly delivery system, aligning with its broader sustainability initiatives.
