Amazon has made a significant change in its Australian distribution network by switching from single-use plastic delivery bags to recyclable paper bags and envelopes. This move aims to reduce plastic waste and make packaging more environmentally friendly. Customers can now expect to receive their orders in flexible paper bags and padded envelopes, which can be easily recycled in household recycling systems across Australia. This initiative covers items sold by Amazon Australia and third-party sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA).

This transition is part of Amazon’s ongoing efforts to minimize its environmental impact. In 2023, the company in Australia had already reduced cardboard box weights by 25%, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices. By eliminating single-use plastic packaging and opting for recyclable paper alternatives, Amazon is taking a step towards a greener future.
Janet Menzies, Amazon Australia Country Manager, highlighted the significance of this change, emphasizing that the shift to 100% recyclable delivery packaging marks a major milestone for the company. The rigorous development and testing process ensured that the paper envelopes are durable enough to withstand the delivery process while ensuring the safe arrival of customer orders. Menzies expressed pride in this achievement and reiterated Amazon’s commitment to continuous innovation in packaging solutions.

While Amazon is striving to reduce single-use plastic packaging, there are exceptions where plastic packaging may still be used, such as when items are shipped directly by third-party sellers. In such cases, Amazon provides guidance on alternative packaging options to promote sustainability. Additionally, for products that come in single-use plastic bags from manufacturers, Amazon aims to use the original packaging to minimize additional material use.

Amazon’s sustainability efforts extend beyond packaging changes. The company has optimized packaging sizes to match products more efficiently, reducing overall material usage. By investing in automated paper packaging machines, Amazon can now produce paper bags on demand, significantly reducing packaging weight and waste. These initiatives align with Amazon’s global commitment to reducing packaging material and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Amazon’s ‘Ships in Product Packaging’ program is another initiative aimed at reducing unnecessary packaging materials. Essential items are shipped in the manufacturer’s original packaging with just an address label, eliminating the need for additional delivery packaging. This approach not only minimizes waste but also reduces the weight of deliveries, contributing to Amazon’s sustainability goals.

Globally, Amazon has achieved significant milestones in sustainability, including a 43% reduction in outbound packaging weight per shipment on average since 2015. By avoiding more than 3 million metric tons of packaging material, Amazon continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental responsibility. In Australia, the number of products shipped without additional Amazon packaging has tripled since 2021, showcasing the company’s dedication to sustainable practices.
