Ipswich Community Gallery is set to host a captivating exhibition titled “On a Roll: Contemporary Interpretations of the Paper Scroll” from August 29 to September 7. This unique showcase will feature 42 pieces by 23 artists from Papermakers and Artists Queensland (PAQ), who have reimagined the traditional scroll using modern techniques.
Attendees can anticipate a display of scroll-inspired artworks that push the boundaries of creativity through techniques such as folding, stitching, printing, layering, and sculpting. Many of these pieces are crafted using handmade paper, showcasing the artists’ commitment to sustainability by utilizing locally sourced plant fibers and recycled materials.
The exhibition aims to prompt contemplation on the cultural significance of scrolls while highlighting their evolution into a contemporary art form. Each artwork on display challenges the conventional notion of a scroll, underscoring paper’s versatility as a medium for storytelling and design.
Established in 1993, PAQ is a community of paper artists united in their passion for sharing skills and nurturing creativity. The group’s diverse practices encompass paper sculpture, artist books, calligraphy, printmaking, marbling, origami, and papermaking using recycled and natural fibers.
Comprising approximately 50 members, PAQ actively encourages new artists to explore the myriad possibilities of paper art. The “On a Roll” exhibition epitomizes the organization’s mission to make paper art accessible and engaging for contemporary audiences.
Art enthusiasts visiting the gallery will have the opportunity to witness firsthand how these artists have transformed the humble scroll into a canvas for innovative expression. By experimenting with various techniques and materials, the participants have breathed new life into this ancient art form, bridging the past with the present.
Through their reinterpretation of the paper scroll, these artists not only pay homage to tradition but also pave the way for future generations to explore the boundless potential of paper as a medium for artistic expression. Their creations serve as a testament to the enduring allure and versatility of this age-old material.
As visitors immerse themselves in the exhibition, they will be transported on a visual journey that celebrates the ingenuity and skill of the artists while inviting reflection on the ever-evolving nature of art. “On a Roll” promises to be a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and the enduring legacy of paper as a medium for artistic exploration.
