Childhood friends Naren Raj and Ashutosh Ananth are rewriting the narrative of stationery in India. Their venture, Rescript, based in Bengaluru, is not your typical startup story filled with tech or capital ventures, but a tale of transforming waste paper into eco-friendly products. This duo is showcasing that business success and environmental responsibility can indeed walk hand in hand.
Their journey began in a modest room cluttered with old furniture and has now blossomed into a national brand that is reshaping how India perceives paper consumption. The co-founders’ shared passion for entrepreneurship and sustainability led them on a path to redefine the stationery industry in India.
Naren Raj and Ashutosh Ananth’s friendship traces back to their early years in nursery school, evolving through their schooling and further solidifying during their BBA studies at Christ University. Their dream of starting a venture together in the sustainability sector slowly took shape over the years.
After briefly diverging paths post-graduation, with Naren’s short stint at Ernst & Young and Ashutosh’s experience in a family-run business, the duo reunited to explore their shared vision. In 2019, a pivotal moment came when they were introduced to a manufacturer in Delhi producing plantable stationery, igniting their interest in sustainable business models.
Their foray into plantable stationery marked the beginning of Rescript’s journey. However, they soon realized the need for sustainability to be an ingrained part of people’s daily lives, leading them to pivot towards creating products like recycled copier paper that catered to everyday needs.
Rescript’s innovative approach lies in their proprietary formulation, which ensures that the recycled paper they produce is not only environmentally friendly but also smooth, durable, and compatible with modern printing equipment. This breakthrough addressed longstanding issues of roughness and compatibility that hindered the adoption of recycled paper.
Their manufacturing process involves collecting waste paper primarily from packaging trimmings and old student notebooks, which is then pulped, pressed, and dried to create reels of recycled paper. Quality control is paramount, with each batch undergoing rigorous testing before being transformed into notebooks, journals, and other stationery items.
Rescript’s commitment to sustainability extends to their choice of not using bleaching agents, giving their paper a natural tone that resonates with authenticity. Their paper holds Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, ensuring that it comes from responsibly managed forests, adding another layer of trust and environmental responsibility.
The startup’s product range includes recycled copier paper, notebooks, journals, pens, and pencils crafted from old newspapers, and custom corporate gifting solutions tailored to clients’ sustainability goals. Their clientele includes corporate giants like Wipro and JP Morgan, schools, and retail outlets, showcasing the broad appeal of sustainable stationery.
Rescript’s success story is not just about revenue growth but also about the tangible impact they have made on the environment. Their dedication to transparency is evident in the custom environmental impact reports they provide to clients, showcasing the trees saved, water conserved, and carbon emissions reduced through the use of their products.
As Rescript continues to flourish, Naren and Ashutosh believe that meaningful change can stem from seemingly small acts, such as choosing recycled paper for your stationery needs. Their journey exemplifies how a simple shift in consumer behavior can lead to significant environmental benefits, setting a positive example for sustainable businesses in India and beyond.
