Amazon has made a significant shift in its packaging approach in Australia, transitioning from single-use plastic delivery bags to recyclable paper alternatives. This eco-friendly move encompasses the replacement of plastic bags and envelopes with flexible paper bags and padded envelopes, which are designed to be easily recyclable in household recycling systems nationwide. This change applies to all items dispatched by Amazon Australia and third-party sellers utilizing Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). Consequently, all delivery packaging for customer orders originating from an Australian fulfilment center is now household recyclable, ensuring a more sustainable packaging process.
The introduction of new padded paper envelopes to replace plastic bubble-wrap lined envelopes and the substitution of single-use plastic bags with paper bags mark significant steps in Amazon’s sustainability journey. In a bid to reduce environmental impact further, Amazon Australia had already reduced cardboard box weights by 25% in 2023. Janet Menzies, the Country Manager of Amazon Australia, emphasized the meticulous development and testing processes that preceded this packaging transformation, ensuring that the paper envelopes are robust enough to withstand the delivery process while safeguarding the safe arrival of customer orders. She highlighted that this milestone is just the beginning, with Amazon committed to ongoing innovation to enhance its packaging practices.
While Amazon has made substantial progress in minimizing single-use plastic in its packaging, some exceptions still exist where plastic packaging may be used. For instance, third-party sellers shipping directly to customers have autonomy over their packaging choices. However, Amazon shares alternative packaging options with these sellers to encourage sustainable practices. In cases where products arrive in single-use plastic packaging from manufacturers, Amazon opts to deliver these products in the original packaging to avoid additional wrapping. Plastic preparation materials like bubble wrap are retained for specific uses such as protecting fragile items or sealing liquid products.
Amazon’s dedication to enhancing packaging extends beyond the elimination of single-use plastics. The company has adopted strategies like right-sizing packages to match products, incorporating more recycled content into packaging materials, and reducing box weights and label sizes to minimize waste. Notably, Amazon Australia has invested in automated paper packaging machines to produce on-demand paper bags for individual products, which are lighter and more eco-friendly compared to traditional plastic padded envelopes.
Through initiatives like the ‘Ships in Product Packaging’ program, Amazon aims to deliver essential items directly in the manufacturer’s original packaging, thereby reducing unnecessary material usage and the weight of deliveries. Globally, Amazon has significantly reduced outbound packaging weight per shipment and avoided millions of metric tons of packaging material since 2015. In Australia, the number of products shipped without additional Amazon packaging has more than tripled since 2021, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable packaging practices.
Amazon’s transition to recyclable paper packaging in Australia underscores its ongoing efforts to prioritize sustainability and reduce environmental impact. This shift aligns with Amazon’s broader sustainability goals and signifies a step towards more eco-conscious practices in the e-commerce industry.
