7-Eleven Australia is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging. By the end of 2023, 95% of the company’s branded packaging was recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Efforts are underway to address the remaining 5% of packaging to further enhance sustainability.
One of the key initiatives is the Simply Cups Program, which aims to reduce single-use cup waste. Customers are encouraged to use reusable cups for beverages like Coffee and Slurpee. For those without reusable cups, collection units are available at select 7-Eleven Australia stores to facilitate cup recycling.
Partnering with Closed Loop since 2018, 7-Eleven Australia has been instrumental in implementing the Simply Cups program across more than 690 stores. These collection stations accept various single-use cups, lids, and straws, regardless of their origin, contributing to a significant reduction in landfill waste.
7-Eleven’s commitment to sustainability extends to its cup materials. Hot Coffee and Tea cups consist of plant-derived components, while Iced Coffee and Hot Chockee cups are kerbside recyclable. Similarly, Slurpee and Shake Station cups contain materials sourced from plants and can be recycled through the Simply Cups collection units.
The company also prioritizes eco-friendly lids made from corn starch or bamboo and sugar cane pulp, ensuring they are either home compostable or recyclable. Straws, cutlery, and paper carry bags are designed with sustainability in mind, using materials like wood pulp and Birchwood to reduce environmental impact.
Although the REDcycle soft plastics recycling program was suspended in 2022, 7-Eleven Australia remains committed to sustainable practices. As a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) since 2007, the company aligns with APCO’s objectives to minimize the environmental footprint of consumer packaging.
By actively participating in APCO initiatives and continuously improving its packaging practices, 7-Eleven Australia demonstrates a genuine commitment to environmental stewardship. Customers can access the latest APCO Annual Report and Action Plan to stay informed about the company’s sustainability efforts and progress.
As consumers increasingly prioritize eco-conscious brands, 7-Eleven’s focus on sustainable packaging aligns with broader industry trends towards environmental responsibility. By embracing recyclable and compostable packaging solutions, the company sets a positive example for the retail sector, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in business operations.
Through ongoing innovation and collaboration with industry partners, 7-Eleven Australia aims to further enhance its packaging sustainability efforts, contributing to a greener future and reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship.
